Evaluation Comments for Choi S

  1. You should take this class only if you love chem! If you aren't 100% sure, then don't beat yourself up about taking 103/104. Having said that, this class challenged me and inspired me and made me want to be a chem major. Professor Choi is intimidating but will spend a lot of time helping you understand if you just ask!
  2. I would recommend this class to anyone willing to work hard and go to office hours. Choi will love you if you go to office hours, ask questions, and prepare for quizzes. The quizzes and tests are difficult, but not impossible if you are willing to spend the extra hours preparing. The key to enjoying this class is making sure that Choi likes you. You cannot be defensive and you cannot argue with her. She loves to be asked questions, especially outside of class time, but do not come into the office arguing about grades because that will get you no where. You get out of this class what you put in and it can be incredibly valuable but it can also be torture.
  3. Hard class. Choi is very demanding, but you will learn a lot and get a good grade if you put in the work. Lectures are interesting and labs are fun (if stressful). I really like Choi and she wants you to succeed, but you will spend hours and hours on the problem sets. Tests are challenging but hw grade will help you. I would definitely take this class again.
  4. Choi is an amazing professor. She is tough and will push you to work hard but it is worth the effort. Choi makes you want to live up to her expectations and if you do, you will have a great experience in this class. Be prepared for a lot of work but if you work hard and have a good attitude you will love Choi and she will show you the respect you have earned.
  5. I wish I knew what these evaluations really meant before I took this class. If you haven't taken chemistry within the past year, you're in for a really rough ride. The workload is borderline absurd, so be prepared to work a lot. Prof Choi is hard to understand and bad at answering questions. She is intimidating in class but truly a sweetheart. She rewards outstanding effort. I recommend taking CHEM0104 instead, because there is honestly no reason to do this (107) to yourself.
  6. Great class... Amazing professor... Be prepared to work hard and learn a good deal of chemistry

  10. Prof. Choi is kind of intimidating in class, but outside of class she's probably one of the nicest profs here. Her exams are ridiculously difficult but they are for most of the class so everything is curved. Take this class only if you're ready for a LOT of studying and not too stellar grades on tests if you don't study a ton. If you have trouble with anything, Prof. Choi is usually available and much better at explaining tough concepts one-on-one.
  11. good class, choi does loads of demonstrations which were always fun to watch and interesting. not an easy course by any means, but it's not too bad if you put in the time.
  12. Sunhee is smart and obviously knows a lot about chemistry, but she expects too much out of her students. She explains things in a very confusing way and assumes that people understand, when in fact almost no one does. She was usually available for extra help, but those hours were not very effective because she would only help on specific homework problems, not with concepts we didn't understand. If you're good at teaching yourself from the textbook, you should take this class. If not, take 103 or 104.
  13. The class would be great if Choi would get rid of her 'tough love' mentality. She certainly was available, but she was very intimidating and hard to approach. I've talked to numerous chem 107 veterans, both from this year and previous years, and they all say the same thing: Choi has, at one time or another, made them cry or feel extremely bad about themselves and their performance in the course. The stress is unbearable, knowing that anything-and I mean anything-could show up on the next exam, and if you get it wrong, Choi will yell at you, humiliate you, tell you that you are failing at life, etc. What's more, throughout the semester, you have no idea how exactly you are doing or what the curve is. Lab with deschaines is great, and very valuble to learning chem, but the rest of the class could be compared to running a gauntlet of simple chemistry taught in a very strange and ineffective way. With all due respect to Sunhee Choi, she is a very smart person, but she needs to work on how effective she is at lecturing and not intimidating students.
  14. If you are intimately familiar with the subjects covered by AP Chem, or would like to be shortly, take this class. Although it is very difficult, it will save you time in the long run because you do not have to take both CHEM 0104 and 0103, which would take up an entire year. However, if at all possible, take it with a professor other than Choi. Although Choi has a large knowledge of chemistry, she is unable to express this knowledge in a manner that is consistently understandable. Part of the problem here stems from the fact that Choi does not appear to have a sufficient grasp of the English language to convey her knowledge. Thus, expect to use your textbook as your main source; otherwise you will be unable to follow along during lecture. Choi has very high expectations and expects full commitment to the class. Pay attention in lecture and write down all examples; tests and quizzes are strongly biased towards the material and examples covered in lecture. Also, expect to have homework (recommended) at least once and possibly twice weekly.
  15. This class is extremely intensive, but I learned A LOT. And beyond the academics, I learned how to manage my time and how to think in a new way. Choi is very intense and intimidating, but she makes you learn and COMPLETELY understand the material.
  16. Chem 107 with Prof. Choi is almost suicide if you are not familiar with the concepts covered in AP Chemistry because the reviews of what is supposed to be a full two semesters of college work is completed in about four or five weeks while the class delves deeper into the material and asks challenging questions. However, if you want to continue taking chemistry at Middlebury, definitely take this class because it will truly prepare you for upper level chemistry classes including Organic Chemistry. Prof. Choi is always available for help and she almost requires that you go to her office hours several times during the semester. Her one on one help can be helpful but it can also be a little bit frustrating because there is a small language barrier. This class was by far the hardest class that I took in my first semester at Middlebury, but it was also by far my favorite. Prof. Choi is a fantastic professor and her excitement for chemistry rubs off on all of her students.
  17. Very challenging, but ultimately you learn a lot.
  18. Chem 107 will save you the bore of 103+104. Sunhee is not as intimidating as she seems at first. This material isn't that hard either. Her test require students to apply knowledge of concepts to real world chemical applications. Exams also require students to mesh various chemical concepts to solve problems. In the end, this makes the tests more interesting. I found Sunhee to be an effective lecturer if you don't stop listening just b/c she has accented english. Her english really isn't THAT hard to understand. Choi is actually a very personable and approachable woman is you realize that she doesn't mean to be as harsh as she sometimes sounds. If you show a little bit more backbone you'll be fine - there is no sense crying over introductory chemistry. Choi expects quite a bit from students, but you'll be happy that she pushes you.
  19. Brace yourself for a bumpy ride...She is EXTREMELY smart in too smart. She has difficulty explaining here stuff. You have to be super smart or just a wizz at textbook learning to ace this course.. looking for a fun, easy course?? click on another link!
  20. those lectures were death and the quizes and tests not much better
  21. Interesting class. You definitely need to get on Choi's good side right away. Her lectures are really fascinating but her tests are SO hard. Get ready to work hard for a semester teaching yourself the material. Choi's available if you need help but is not good at explaining herself or tying concepts together.
