Evaluation Comments for Sontum

  1. Studying is over rated for Sontum's test- talking to him is not though. This man is brilliant and thinks in numbers, but is extremely friendly and wants you to succeed. Class was fun and friendly due to small size (10). He treats you with much resprct and values your input. Take it. By the way, labs are horendous- but class isn't too bad.
  2. If you are REALLY familiar with everything from AP Chem, or are prepared to make yourself familiar, take this course, because it will save you a tonn of time in large into classes for an entire year (ie 103 and 104). However, this class starts off tough and doesn't let up. If you take it upon yourself to review material right after class, read the book, ask questions, etcetera, this is a great experience. I didn't at first, but got a lot out of it later in the course. Sontum is a genius, adn because of this tends to speak and talk in numbers, write labvs that not even other chem professors fully understand, and hold all of his students to very high styandards. He is an awesome guy and will make things very clear to you if you ask him specific questions, despite the fast pace of lecture. Lab is very worthwhile, but with very time-consuming write-ups. If you take this course, make sure you know what you're doing before the labs, why you're doing it, and how you plan on writing your stuff up. The excperience I had may be very different from future ones due to the fact that my class adn lab were each tiny (10 people). You realize afterward that this course is really worthwhile, and prepares you well for not only advanced chem, but all the midd science classes.
