Evaluation Comments for Byers

  1. Everyone loves to complain about this class, and yes it is a ton of work and very challenging, but Byers makes it manageable. The class had a Facebook group which proved to be very helpful. Keep up with the readings, work with your friends, and all will be ok!

  3. GREAT CLASS
  4. As a chem/biochem major, I'm definitely on the less intense side. I believe the real chem majors call my major "biochem light." Anyway, I was absolutely terrified when I signed up for this course. There was no reason to be. Byers makes the material really approachable, even if you weren't running the NMR spectrometer after three days in sophomore year orgo. Lectures were genuinely interesting, and since Byers doesn't have to stick to a strict curriculum (like 241/242), he goes off on all sorts of fun tangents about chemistry, chemists and beer drinking. Your final project is a wikipedia page you publish yourself, and your final exam is written specifically for a synthesis you pick out from the literature. Awesome course.
  5. You can miss a few classes and get away with it. The material taught in this course is exceptional. It ties up some loose end pertaining to information learned in Physics, Physical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. There is an excellent unit on NMR Spectroscopy
