  1. Great Reading List! Seriously take it for the books. Although they do get long and a bit tough to finish midway through the semester. You don't really need to read them all as long as you read most, and the 2 papers focus very specifically on one or two books. Discussions were interesting, though a few people seemed to dominate by the end of the semester. Take this class with Nash whether you're a lit major or not!
  2. The books that we read for this course and the material that we discussed was very interesting, but it was very difficult to keep up with the reading pace. We read a novel each week, and at times they were too much to get through in the time allotted. The course grade consists of three essays and participation. It is not very clear what is expected in the essays and feedback on the essays is little to none. Also, Professor Nash is horrible at getting your assignments back to you. He took two months to return the first essay to me. The reading material is great and Professor Nash obviously is very knowledgable and passionate about the subject, but I would think carefully before taking this class.
  3. Nash is awesome. He knows just about everything about African-American lit, yet still manages to hold great discussions and take insights from students. The reading list is mostly great books, a few not so great, but ones like Invisible Man you want to take with Nash. No homework except for reading good literature. No quizzes, two papers. Take it.
  4. Professor Nash is great. He's really smart and knows a TON about African American culture. He gives a lot of cultural and historical background, which makes it all the more interesting. He's a really nice guy and makes an effort to learn everyone's names quickly. It's a big class, though, and English majors tend to dominate the class discussions. It's really hard to keep up with the readings; a novel a week is not easy, especially since some of them are really long. The books are all fantastic, though, and worth taking the time to read. He's a tough grader, and you don't know this until too late because he takes FOREVER to give them back. He's so nice and has three kids who were sick a lot, so you feel badly for him, but it also sucks when you don't know your first grade to write the next paper. All in all a good class, though.
