Evaluation Comments for Mao, J

  1. Professor Mao is amazing!!!!! She's fair and enthusiastic. The reading in this course was very interesting. She had students facilitate discussion for certain readings every week in pairs. The atmosphere is extremely friendly. There were three essays and no exams. Overall, a great class that was easy-going.
  2. Prof. Mao is a very intelligent yet accessible teacher, and her classes are fascinating. She has such a creative mind that the class is a series of "aha" moments when she leads you to make new connections or come up with an idea you hadn't thought of before. She has very high expectations, but she is also very fair and accommodating. She definitely helped me become a better student of history.
  3. Professor Mao is such a fun professor. Her grading isn't overly tough, but she has her expectations. The readings are pretty important because participation is a big part of the class, but skipping one every now and then or skimming them if you're running low on time won't hurt your overall great a ton.
  4. Prof. Mao is an excellent teacher and scholar. She is brilliant and an expert in her field, but she doesn't live in some lofty and distant realm of academia. She is able to translate her brilliant knowledge into terms that are engaging, relevant, and comprehensible to students. America and the Pacific is one of the best-designed classes I have taken at Midd so far. In saying this, I mean that the class was able to dive into diverse areas/eras of American-Asian history, yet Prof. Mao also ensured it wasn't just a survey, but we got real depth and gained profound understandings of each topic. The classes are designed mostly as discussions, which Mao facilitates well, and the readings were generally fascinating and interesting to read. Highly recommended to all students, especially history majors.
