Evaluation Comments for Cluss R

  1. This class was a huge disappointment. Bob focuses on and tests you on such minor, insignificant details about various pathways that you lose your understanding of the big picture. The amount of memorization was pointless, and by not focusing on the big picture of metabolism, the material doesn't stay with you. Bob is a really nice guy and is willing to talk to you about the material, but the amount of comprehension and detailed understanding he expects from students is unrealistic.
  2. Biochem majors seem to give this course a bad rep - myself included, at first. There is a lot of memorization. So much that sometimes it seems like Bob is not teaching, but just giving you stuff to memorize. Despite all of this, metabolism turned out to be the most USEFUL COURSE in my biochem major, as a premed at least. Metabolism stuff is ALL over the MCAT. And if you do want to go to medical school, be prepared for a lot more memorization that is a lot less fun than Bob's course. For the record, Bob does try to make you think and synthesize the material as much as he can. But when it comes down to it, you either know the intermediates of the Krebs cycle or you don't, and it's directly dependent on your willingness to memorize them. So in summary- tae this course if you are interested in gaining a deeper, more DETAILED understanding of one of the most important applications of biochemistry to human physiology (heyyyy premeds I'm talking to you). Don't take this course if you are more interested in learning biochemistry in generalities. You will be miserable.
  3. This course was not impressive. Bob's approach to the material was boring, and consisted only of daily powerpoint slides with charts and graphs you could find in the book, and that the book explained much better than he did. Lectures were disorganized. Bob simply has too many administrative commitments to be a good professor. Quotes like, "I sometimes have to remember why I took this job in the first place, which was to teach," are concerning. Bob also takes 3 weeks to get your exam grades back, and students didn't receive presentation grades until around 10 weeks after. All in all, a very disappointing way to end my major.
  4. Professor Cluss took a really long time to get stuff back. The class had a lot of memorization and was fairly disorganized. All the slides were figures from the textbook and I didn't see how the class added to the book.
