Evaluation Comments for Sandwick, R

  1. hardest, but most rewarding lab course i've taken. the material is fascinating- it's everything you talked about in CHEM0322 in the fall but haven't used yet. lab reports are time intensive, but you get really helpful comments on your writing. tests were actually useful. very well-planned lab.
  2. Rog is the man. Class discussions focus on lab protocol, labs themselves are fun and not overwhelming. Lab reports require certain standards and a lot of time and effort, but Rog and Kathy were available any day of the week. Great overall complement to CHEM 322--topics included enzyme characterization and gene cloning and expression (of RpiA and RpiB). Two midterms (18% of grade) and 4 lab reports comprised the grade pretty much. Very relaxed, interesting, and well worth any science major's time!
  3. It's a required course, you have to take it. If you can take 311 or 313, take 311. Choi is much better than rog at making you think about science. This class is too much plug and chug. Nobody knows why some things in biology don't work and in this class, concentrations and all the experimental conditions feel made up. You don't get any experience planning an experiment, they are just sort of laid out like recipes. A huge amount of waiting and down time. But it's a required class, so you have to take it if you're a biochem major. MAkes you realize that biochem and microbiology labwork can be a little soul-sucking. The payoff is the discussion, which is unfortunately never very good in this class. Also, the lab reports are a huge pain in the butt.
