  3. The professor: Morrison is extremely smart, personable, and helpful. She's big on self-discovery; she likes to guide students, but forces them to figure things out themselves, and relies heavily on firsthand source material. These attributes often contribute to the learning experience, but are also occasionally frustrating. She's fluent in Mandarin and Japanese - if you study these languages, she'll often provide characters along with transliterated English. The class: The subject material is brutally complex and abstract, but it's Morrison's specialty and she nails it. The coverage is very broad, yet our class penetrated deep into the material. We really bonded with each other throughout the semester, and had plenty of fun along with the bucketloads of reading (keep up or you'll die). There are a few field trips - go on them; they're fantastic. Overall, a tough but not quite debilitating course in which occasionally you might become frustrated, but you'll end up having lots of fun and learning SO much about both Zen and how to quickly get to the heart of difficult material.
