  1. This course has a lot of redundant primary source readings, but Professor Morrison covers them well in class. She really knows the material and is very passionate about it, so she has lots of insights and anecdotes...However it can be hard to get excited for at 8am, and unless you really love the subject material enough to totally commit yourself to it, it can be opaque and get boring. Two 5-page papers plus a final 10 page research paper
  2. Professor Morrison's standards are HIGH. This can be a good thing, because it provides a challenge and forces you to put in a lot of effort, but it also can be frustrating when it feels like even your best efforts will go unrewarded. As someone who took this class to fulfill a requirement, and who has little to no interest in religions, this class was a real struggle. It was by far the most difficult, most demanding course I have taken at Midd so far. Morrison is incredibly passionate about her subject and knows a great deal of information. She filled lectures with anecdotes, and she structured the classes so that they did not get boring. However, I sometimes felt that, short of pouring every bit of energy I had into this class, nothing I did could be truly satisfactory for her. If you have a lot of passion for Chinese religions, and don't care if your GPA takes a hit, then this class may be manageable for you. Be prepared for tons of repetitive primary sources though. They DO get old.
