  3. Neil Waters is the man. Good lecturer and a great guy. Exams were very straightforward; if you study you will do well. One could get an A in this class without doing much of the reading, but I would recommend doing it just because the class is that much more enjoyable when you actually know what's going on.
  4. Take this class if you plan to not fall asleep during his boring lectures and/or you are interested in Asian history.
  5. Very easy, not very much work, but Waters can be a really boring lecturer. Probably not worth your time.
  6. Overall, a pretty good class. I was really excited about it at first and got less interested as the semester progressed, but maybe that has something to do with my tendency to lose interest in history as it starts to progress past 1000 A.D. or so. This is an especially good class if need an AAL credit or are interested in East Asian history. I personally had had no experience in the field, so the information presented was interesting and new. The assignments are fairly easy, but each counts for a lot. It's easy to slack off in reading and still get by, but the selection is an unusual and and intriguing one (a Chinese detective novel included), so it's good to read them if you have time.
  7. Before you sign up for this class, you must realize that it is the most boring class you will take. The lectures have absolutely nothing to do with the readings, and at any given moment, half of the class is probably asleep. However, Waters is a funny guy and generous grader.
  8. This class was interesting, although sometimes Prof. Waters would go off on a really random tangent. He's an interesting character and is kind of the stereotypical college professor of movies. There isn't many tests at all, so if you failed on something, you have to work your ass off on the only other grades you have.
  9. Waters is a great professor who has a sense of humor AND knows his stuff! It's easy to slack off on the reading though, but it's best not to. A great class!
  10. Not many tests, papers or assignments on which to base our grade-- which both made it easy to get away with not doing ANY of the work, and difficult to bring your grade up if you bombed anything. But Prof Waters is a really great and engaging professor, and I would recommend this course to both those truly interested in the subject and those who just need a dist req in an OTH course.
  11. One of the most painful classes of my educational career. The material was incredibly boring, and really learning about it has no purpose unless you love Asian history, which I've since found out that I definitely don't. Waters's teaching style doesn't help much either. He's nice, but so scattered you literally have no idea what he's talking about. The class was so excruciatingly boring and slow, at any point during any class you could look around and see roughly 1/3 of the class asleep. Also, the discussion readings were terrible - served no purpose, and nobody in the class (save for one or two people) ever read. I took this class because it looked easy, but honestly it's not even worth it becuase it's so painful.
  12. Fantastic class, smooth transition into oriental history for those Eurocentrics out there. Not only is the material rich and fascinating, Waters is a riot as a lecturer ? really, he goes off on some hilarious tangents and anecdotes sometimes, but because he?s so knowledgeable about his field (Japan in particular) he always ties it into the course in a fun and memorable way. This is the ideal class for any student: relatively light workload, only two or three short papers, some long readings that you really don?t have to do except for discussion, and a midterm exam and final that are extremely straightforward. prof will give you a study sheet including everything that could possibly be on the test. Just pay attention to lectures and take good notes. The best thing about this course is that you won?t have to work like a dog to make decent marks, and you also come out of it with a ton of intellectual baggage. Waters FTW!
  13. So boring. Lectures were painfully boring. Not much work, but I'd rather take an interesting (but more difficult) course.
