  2. This was not a great first exposure to the Middlebury experience. First off, Professor Craven doesn't understand the meaning of a 'seminar'-she lectured off of powerpoints for some classes or just wrote notes on the board for others. The readings were not necessary to do well, the papers did not contribute to the class experience and were based on boring documentaries, and her standards were VERY unclear for all assignments. Professor Craven is a nice woman but not great at lecturing or conveying enthusiasm or interest in what she's teaching. Even if you're a prospective economics major, do not take this class for your first year seminar.
  3. Don't do it. I took this class because I thought it would be about the sociological/anthropological aspects of the Great Depression. It wasn't. Most of the students were prospective economics majors, but they didn't seem to like the class either. The readings are kind of dull, and the papers you have to write are pointless. Not to mention, there are several movie screenings involving really boring documentaries that you then have to write a response paper about. Keep in mind that the professor will be your advisor for the next two years. She is nice enough, but I know some who feel that she does not give enough instruction when it comes to advising. She is also a really harsh grader and we even had a test after thanksgiving break so there was a lot of material to study. I really wish I had taken a different FYSE because this was by far the class I disliked the most first semester.
