Evaluation Comments for Snyder, S

  1. I agree with the person above, he makes you very feel comfortable but he doesn't try to dumb/dazzle up things. He just teaches and is very nice and approachable too.
  2. First semester freshman year, I ended up taking Japanese on a whim and I definitely do not regret it. I plan to take it throughout the rest of my college career. ALL of the Japanese senseis are amazing, helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. Snyder-sensei is intelligent and witty. He's always open to questions and answers them well. He explains concepts wonderfully and never makes you feel stupid when you don't understand something, instead, he tries his best to help you understand. He has vast amounts of Japanese knowledge. Overall, you always have to participate in class, and in order to truly make headway in understanding the language, you should spend extra time reviewing new vocab, grammar, etc. I love Japanese and can't wait for the progress I'll make during winter term.
  3. I've taken plenty of classes with him. He is the nicest, most understanding, caring professor I've met in Middlebury.
  4. If you're going to start learning at new language at Midd, take Japanese! It may seem like a tough language, but the professors in the department make it worth it. Snyder teaches in a straightforward style -- no dumbing down or inane wastes of time -- without making you feel dumb if you don't know something or stumble over a particularly tricky sentence. He teaches you everything you need to know, and exercises from the book and frequent quizzes help reinforce that. It certainly helps that Snyder is helpful, friendly, and humorous, and occasionally tries to incorporate aspects of Japanese culture into class, although it's difficult. You will need to spend time going over new vocabulary and grammar (unless, I suppose, you're really, REALLY good at learning new languages), but as long as you do that you'll be fine. I switched to Japanese after taking Italian freshman year, and I certainly don't regret it!
