Evaluation Comments for Larrabee J

  1. The material wasn't all that hard, but Larrabee's expectations on tests were unclear and misleading to say the least. The lecture was boring and I had trouble paying attention, everything he says is on his class notes which are just a watered-down version of the textbook. The Sapling Questions were the only part that made me feel like I was learning anything. Overall a frustrating waste of my time.

  5. Prof. Larrabee knows how to motivate his students to want to learn! I was a horrible chem student, but he was a great prof.
  6. i hated this class. larrabee was completely unapproachable and generally wasnt even that helpful. he seemed to be a hard grader even though he claimed to give partial credit. his lectures were often really confusing (even though he gave handouts out) because he'd get pre-occupied with demonstrations and examples. this made for a difficult time when he would give quizzes at the end of EVERY class. also, the homework wasnt reflective of the exam questions and unless you paid attention to the syllabus, you wouldnt even know that exams were coming up because he would stay away from reviewing, review sessions, or even extra help time. overall, i really really did not like this class. lab with deschaines didnt help either--he was a VERY HARSH grader with lab reports.
  7. Don't know about the other reviewers, I found the first exam really easy and was surprised at my grade. I've found the labs and the extensive lab reports to be the most challenging. Labs can be detailed and intricate and very, very specific. Overall a good class.
  8. Larrabee is a nice guy, but all he does is examples on the board. You really have to take the initiative and do the learning yourself.
  9. Don't be fooled by the fact that the beginning of the class is rediculously easy, the first test was rough. If you studied and put in time though, the class was a synch.
  10. Much better than Chem103-this class was a nice supplement to BIO250. Larrabee seems to be a pleasant, laid-back guy but I found him a little intimidating to approach. His teaching style didn't really work for me--his note handouts were VERY confusing and not detailed enough for us to know what the heck he was talking about. I felt like I taught most of this class to myself b/c I was always lost in lecture and mostly found myself staring off into space. Textbook is the same one as CHEM103--very helpful. After class I would read over the chapter to catch up on what I missed, which suited me fine. Quizzes EVERY DAY...no comment. The first exam was VERY harshly graded (although he may SAY he gives partial credit for showing work, that turned out to be a blatant LIE!) and the second exam was ridiculously easy. The final was a nightmare--17 pgs long! Looking back, I'm glad I took the class but it's sure nice to have it over with! The labs made the class bearable...SO much fun (MUCH better than CHEM 103 labs)!
  11. The class is run efficiently and is well-organized. If you want to succeed then read the book. Quizzes are fair and his questions during class are too. First two midterms are easy if you care at all about the class and the final is a bit more challenging. Labs are kind of exhausting but worth it because they're interesting. Simply put, this class is doable.
  12. Larrabee is not out to get you. He wants you to do well in this course which is reassuring. While he may seem unapproachable, once you find the time to actually meet with him, he is VERY helpful. Exams are straight forward (no curveballs). Larrabee spends a lot of time on transition metals in the course, as it is his area of expertise. The only negative to his class is that the quizzes are worth 15% which can completely change your grade. I think Larrabee is a very nice guy and very approachable.
  13. I am not a chemistry major but I thoroughly enjoyed James Larrabee. The information was presented in an easy to follow notes that he had prepared. The worst part of the class is writing the lab reports but the labs are fun and applicable to the course so they are bearable. The quizzes and problem sets forced me to focus on the important concepts for the test. Overall, enjoyable class and great professor.
  14. Easiest course by far. Exams are regurgitations of problem sets and are extremely straightforward. Problem sets are assigned every two weeks making the class a breeze. Spent the whole semester doing acid-base chemistry. Daily quiz in lecture were easy as well if you stayed awake. Larrabee is a very nice guy, but still unapproachable and had extremely short office hours and often shrugs off questions.
  15. Most kids that are in this class have to be because it's a basic requirement to move on for a science degree and on a pre-med track. If you've got to take 104, take it with Larrabee! He's really a sweet guy and although his lectures and notes could be very confusing he's always there to help and is a thorough (if not very patient) explainer. He's pretty cool, I found myself going to his office hours just to ask about a homework problem that I didn't really need help with so I could hang out with him. Be aware that you will have to take serious initiative in clarifying some of the tougher concepts for yourself but overall the coursework is manageable and graded pretty fairly (except of course for the final which was monstrous and obscure). The lab portion of the class is pretty straightforward and Dr Kim is a real gem.
  16. Professor Larrabee knows his stuff. Be sure to keep up with lecture material, since he commonly gives out quizzes at the end of lecture and those quizzes definitely hurt my grade. Otherwise, work on problem sets with friends, do practice problems prior to exams, work hard, ask questions, and you'll do just fine.
  17. Prof. Larrabee was a really good teacher. Chem104 was much better than Chem103. He gave quizzes at the end of every class, which might sound really bad, but I actually thought they were very helpful. They sort of made you pay attention during class, and they also highlighted what was important to remember. There were 5 or 6 problem sets, which really helped raise your grade. The two exams weren't hard if you paid attention during class. The final exam was LONG. You have unlimited time to take it, and you will need at LEAST 5 or 6 hours to finish it. A lot of people took a lot longer though. He's a fair grader though, and very very organized. I DEFINITELY recommend this class to anyone!
  18. This is a great class! if you took chem 103 with sontum, this class is about a thousand times better. Larabee sort of comes across as intimidating, but once you talk to him he's actually a very nice guy and always willing to take questions, even outside of office hours. As for the final- it's not that bad. With any of his exams, there's quite a few pages to leave you room to do scratchwork, but not that many questions. The other nice thing about his exams is they sort of lead you in the right direction- like the answer for part a) will help you answer b), etc. Labs are tricky because there's a lot of calculations- Prof. kim also comes across as a little intimidating because of the accent, but is also very approachable and helpful for questions.
  19. I really enjoyed this intro chem class. The material was presented in a standard way (class notes for each chapter with sample problems) and Prof. Larrabee always went over sample problems. The actual course substance was pretty cool...especially when we got to transition metal chemistry. The only thing I had problems with were the labs, and once I started going to the lab instructor to get the concepts cleared up, everything was fine. The quizzes at the end of each class were also very useful--even if they were a bit intimidating at first. The experience was great and I would wholeheartedly recommend taking this class for anyone interested in general chemistry.
