  2. Professor Ralph is an enthusiaztic lecturer and loves subject he teaches. Its easy to remain engaged in class because of his animated lecture style.
  3. Great class, Jim Ralph is the man. You will learn a lot, and it is very interesting. Participate in discussions, it will help.
  4. Although Ralph is a sweet guy who is really enthusiastic and the material overall is really interesting, it became rather repetitive and monotonous. If the class had only lasted a quarter, that would have been sufficient, but I do think the general concepts were valuable. He assigns lots of reading, but it isnt necessary to do it because he lacks control over the discussion atmosphere. Overall interesting class, but I've had better professors.
  5. I really enjoyed this class - it made me think of urban america in a different way. Just because you live in Vermont, doesn't mean you shouldn't know about city life. Professor Ralph was really helpful - and he's a fun guy to talk to.
  6. Like everyone else has said, Ralph is a great guy and a great professor. He has a passion for his subject, which is great to see and also helps 9 AM lectures not be too boring. I would definitely recommend doing the reading...it will help enormously on the midterm and final (the only two tests). There's a short 4-5 pager in the first half, and a longer term paper towards the end. Neither are too bad...I ended up getting really into my topic and writing both my papers a few pages too long. Anyway, this was a good class, if a little boring at times. I don't look at cities the same way anymore.
  7. Prof Ralph is a great guy. He is always there to help when you need it- only issue is that he talks a lot because he knows so much about Urban America. Class consists of two papers (5 and 10 pages), a mid term, and a final. There is a good amount of reading to do per week but you don't need to do all of it. As long as you pay attention and understand the general concepts behind the authors for the tests, you'll be fine. Great class.
  8. This was a very interesting class. Participate in discussions and you will do fine.
  9. Outstanding class. Very well organized and presented. Discussions were well led and engaging. The readings were relevant and interesting. Highly recommend this class.
  10. Jim Ralph rocks! History of Urban America turned out to be one of the best classes I have taken at Middlebury. While the topic is interesting, Professor Ralph that brought it to life. His lectures are well outlined and entertaining- as well as educational. It's obvious that he puts a lot of time into preparing for each class. My discussion section is lively and there's good camaraderie amongst the students. Bottom line- this is a great class and I'd recommend it to anyone. This person also suggested: Ralph's favorite word is "moreover".
