  2. This course is essentially a Spanish course in the much more interesting context of Latin American history. "Miguel" is a clear and riveting lecturer, although sometimes difficult to get ahold of outside of class. At the beginning of the class, you choose a region of interest, and you and your group focus most of your semester's work on that area (PowerPoint presentations and news reports, especially). The class involved a lot of group projects, discussions, and oral presentations that focused primarily on developing advanced communication skills. Also, you will read plenty of source material (text, literature, letters, documents) and write at least three sizeable papers (in Spanish!) for the class, so be prepared for that. Since the course is a very broad overview of the entire history of every country in Spanish America, keeping together the names and events for the final was a daunting task (especially since this was not the main focus of the course). All in all, it was a very comfortable and interactive learning environment despite the fact that our communication skills improved more than our knowledge of cultural history.
  3. Prof Fernandez makes the class fun and engaging. He is also very understanding about problems with workload, and is flexible on the due dates. I got a lot out of the class in terms of preparing for study abroad.
  4. You definitely learn a lot about the history of hispanoamerica in this class - meaning sometimes he rushes through material on his powerpoints. The progression of essays makes sense, but Fernandez isn't always clear (or even sure himself) of what he wants on them, and he can be a picky grader in some respects). However getting to a particular region is great in terms of really going in depth for certain countries. Sometimes the reading is dense but it's never too much to handle (never more than 15 pages or so of spanish). Fernandez is also great at facilitating class discussions and getting you to think differently about what you have read/learned.
