Evaluation Comments for Woolson, M

  1. Interesting class that covers a broad range of information. I feel that I gained more from improvement in my reading, writing and speaking skills more than from the actual content of the course. Woolson is energetic and eager to facilitate discussion. There are many little assignments, some papers and exams but nothing overwhelming. You do a final project on a topic of choice that is a great culmination to the course.
  2. I would highly recommend avoiding this class. The readings were scattered and covered a broad range of topics that were almost unrelated to one another. Most of the readings were borderline impossible - I actually was able to find an english translation for one and still had no idea what is was about. The homework was posted on a segue website and it was confusing and sometimes difficult to figure out exactly what was assigned. Class discussions were forced, students would be called on to give their opinions and if Woolson didn't agree with what you said she would give you glares and weird looks, destroying any confidence you would have to speak out loud. Finally there were 1.5-3 hour movie sessions almost every Sunday night. This class was a lot of work and not much fun at all.
  3. do NOT take this class with prof. woolson. she is absolutely awful! she's probably a very nice person outside of class, but she's really mean and condescending in class! i am very good at spanish, but i was always afraid to speak in her class because i was afraid i'd say the wrong answer. normally, i'd be okay with being wrong, but she literally goes out of her way to correct your mistakes and make you feel bad about yourself. i know i had intelligent things to say, and i wish i could've said them, but i was honestly too afraid of her and her nasty comments to try to speak. if you're interested in the material, you might consider taking this class, but honestly, it's not interesting, the readings are irrelevant, and none of them make much sense anyway. it's a pretty pointless class - i just took it because i'm a spanish minor.
