Evaluation Comments for Baldridge

  1. The material is really fantastic and will change the way you interact with literature. Prof. Baldridge is alright, a decent lecturer but not terribly approachable. Exam was easy. My only real complaint is that the papers were really just regurgitating lecture material; they didn't really call for any real analysis.

  4. Professor Baldridge is not a harsh grader, exactly, but this class is definitely not an easy A. The lectures, however, are very interesting and informative, and the opportunities to approach literature using different theories is very valuable.
  5. This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. I have applied it to every other English class I've taken since. B's lectures were fantastic and funny and great. If you take good notes you will be fine for the final. Before I took the class I heard a lot of bad things about Baldridge. Apparently he was really unpopular when he first came to Middlebury. He's a little bit awkward, but he knows his stuff and he'll teach you a lot. People seem to give him an undeservedly hard time.
  6. I think Baldridge has a bad reputation which isn't entirely fair. The lectures were very straightforward and discussions were tolerable. As for his sense of humour and awkward comments, honestly, just grow up. If you can't handle a professor's bad jokes or simply ignore them, go back to middle school.
  7. This course was designed by Baldridge, and the English department really depends on him to teach it. This is evident in the passion he shows for the subject matter and the incredible care he takes in each one of his lectures. He's a bit of a showman, honestly, and the lectures can be campy or witty or like some kind of well-scripted comedy romp. The papers are fairly difficult, but useful for growth as an English major. Baldridge gives great notes on the papers he grades, and while you won't get an easy A, he'll be very open to discussing why. Take this class early in your English major track, and don't hesitate to take it with Baldridge. He's very intelligent and friendly, though at times a bit aloof or uncomfortable once he gets off script.
  8. I certainly wouldn't have taken it if it weren't a requirement, but all of you ENAM majors will have to deal with it sometime. I didn't particularly enjoy this class, but it wasn't as bad as I had expected. My take was that the lectures and the readings for them were most often boring, while the once-weekly discussions and those readings were pretty interesting. This is no particular fault of Professor Baldrige's lecture style; I just hate the idea of talking about literary theory conceptually (in the lectures) without actually applying it to literature (which does finally happen in the discussions). Here's the good news: though the format of the final is annoyingly futile, it's no big deal. It's based entirely on the terms that he writes on the board at the beginning of each lecture.
  9. For an English major, the material presented in this class is valuable and interesting. Professor Baldridge is an excellent lecturer, and he offers extensive, helpful comments on paper assignments. However, he fails to develop relationships with his students.
  10. this is class is less than exciting. too bad it's a requirement. baldridge needs to rethink the discussion section. yikes.
  11. Professor Baldridge explained the difference between men and women by the different approaches they would take to seeing a fire. The men, he said, would 'piss it out'. The women, if they tried to 'piss it out' would burn their genitals. He then laughed at himself. This professor, while effective in explaining concepts, is very annoying and self-righteous. If you can take this requirement with anyone else, I'd recommend it.
