Evaluation Comments for Van Order M

  1. Van Order, being a newer faculty member, doesn't push anyone too much. Also, because he's in the Italian department--he quotes Dante constantly--he worked extra hard to understand our often Anglo-centric readings and criticisms on them, that he might have many topics to throw out in class discussion. He's easygoing and amiable. He let us spin out our own ideas in class and in papers, and, unlike many professors, always respected each student's individual writing style. Instead of Friday classes, we had informal meetings in his office, where we'd talk about papers, current readings, education in general, etc. Those were great, really. No tests or quizzes, but there were five papers (several drafts each) and weekly symposia in Munroe that could be quite tiring. Beware, though; this class may not suit hardcore English students. As for the rest of you trying to fulfill your CW requirement, if you're willing to keep up with the readings, it's perfect.
