Evaluation Comments for Bertolini, M

  1. This was an awesome first-year seminar. Mrs. B. is a really excellent professor to have as a FYS teacher, because she really holds your hand through the process of transitioning to college writing! I can say with absolute certainty that my writing has improved tremendously after taking this class. That being said, I would caution anyone who does not LOVE Jane Austen from taking this class. It was a lot of work compared to most FYS's. Lots of novels, lots of papers...but overall very fun and a very valuable experience (if you like Jane Austen).
  2. If you love Jane Austen then definitely take this course. The workload is intense - reading required for every class, journal entries due at midnight before every class, papers due every sunday at midnight - but the material is interesting. Most of the films were good except for some of the BBC versions which had TERRIBLE acting. We were required to meet with an ACE a couple times and a peer writing tutor to correct every paper which was annoying at the time but definitely worth it in the end. Mrs. B is very helpful and is a fair grader. Also, you can tell that she definitely loves Jane Austen and wants to share her knowledge with the class. The class became pretty close because of all the screenings and dinners (oh, and a english country dinner dance), so it was a pretty good class overall if you don't mind doing the work.
  3. This class is a lot of work, but you get everything you put into it and more. Mary Bertolini is a fantastic professor - she cares a lot about her students and really knows how to get the best out of her students. First year seminars are designed to get everyone's writing ability to the college level, and this course does just that. It was absolutely amazing to compare my first few papers to the last one - the improvement was astonishing, and I even started out as a good writer. If you want to improve, TAKE THIS CLASS! It'll be tough, but it will be one of the best decisions you make. This said, this class is a lot of work. You will write a lot of papers and do a lot of reading. If you decide to take this class, I would highly recommend getting a head start on the reading over the summer - it'll save you in the long run! Also - MRS. B IS AWESOME! So take the class. :)
  4. In terms of First Year Seminars, you can't choose a better one. Like the above poster said, the workload is intense since you read all 6 of Austen's full length novels and have journals, papers, meetings, a digital media project and an oral presentation, but don't let that discourage you. This is literally the best class I have taken at Midd. Mrs. B is amazing and will really help you develop as a college level writer in an environment that is safe for experimentation since she doesn't grade until the third draft. Not only will she help you with your writing, but she also knows how to guide you to every possible resource on campus and is an amazing person. Even after I declared a major I still went to talk to her. This class does get supper close simply because you spend a ton of time together with three classes a week, screenings, a dinner and a English country dance/dinner. If you have any interest in Austen, or English literature this is a great choice.
  5. Mrs. B is awesome! Though this class was Jane Austen like Jane Austen to the max, I really enjoyed the course and found it valuable! Mrs. B teaches you a lot about writing and helps you transition from a high school writer to a college one, which many first year seminar professors do not do. So if you like Jane Austen and love Pride & Prejudice take this class! You're going to like the way you write, I guarantee it!
