Evaluation Comments for Brayton D

  1. No Comment
  2. If you are looking for a fun course with a dynamic and engaging professor, look no further. There is a lot of reading, but no more than an average literature course at Midd, and none of it is unbearably dry.
  3. Outstanding course. Professor Brayton is a fantastic professor and makes everything we read interesting and exciting.
  4. Brayton is an amazing professor, and obviously loves teaching this course. Great syllabus, and a really interesting and fun class over all.
  5. I filled notebooks with Professor Brayton's words. He was so eloquent and brilliant that I actually copied his phrasing verbatim, as it was so wise I knew I'd want to read it again and again and keep on learning from it. He keeps everyone engaged with his lecturing skills and his humor, while also drawing mass participation and translating foolish comments into astute remarks. He picked great books (many of which are lesser known) and really provided a fascinating and important insight into sea culture and maritime literature, sharing his vast reservoir of knowledge on the subject. We only wrote two papers and also had no tests and quizzes (aside from the final), so there really was no work to be done if you didn't do the reading. Brayton does not force anyone to work, but feels that it is our education and we will only benefit if we choose to. He is why we pay 50,000 a year to go to Middlebury. Take this class if you can.
  6. Best professor at Middlebury I've ever had. Take this course!
  7. Brayton is the best lecturer I have had at midd. He makes a class room of 50 seem like 10... often you felt like he was doing stand up comedy instead of teaching Moby dick. Def best professor I have ever had. Take this course!
