Evaluation Comments for Clinton, M

  1. Professor Clinton is a very good lecturer and if you are interested in China, definitely take this class as it. The readings are sometimes excessive but you do not need to do all of them. For the exams, combining the knowledge from the slides with your notes is totally sufficient, believe me, I got an A in every single assignment. For the essays, it is important to actually do the readings and cite, but do not be excessive with your writing because she will give you a worse grade for it. Although I really enjoyed the class, I have some serious critique points. Firstly, Clinton comes of at somewhat unfriendly, but really is not and you should seek her help if you need it. Secondly, her teachings about China are clearly marxist influenced and not totally objective. I do not know if all the students in the class got a notion of this, but she is somewhat apologetic about Mao (e.g. Great Leap Forward is not really discussed), therefore and as always in college, you should question what you are being taught. She puts a huge emphasis on the Japanese atrocities during the Nanjing Massacre (300.000 victims) but rarely mentions how many Chinese actually died during the post-war Comunnist rule (35+ million). Thirdly, the discussion section is not really well thought through and rather uninspired.

  5. Pretty easy but she is the most boring lecturer you will ever hear in your entire life. Sooooo boring
  6. The class gives you a solid foundation on an important topic. That said, I disliked Clinton's lecturing style and attitude. She's very insecure, and as a result, often hostile.
  7. You learn a lot and she really knows her material. So pay attention in class and engage with the materials, she is also very helpful with papers even though she might look intimidating at first sight. Take this class and you will feel more empowered and confident about the history of China.
  8. pretty good class. pretty easy.
  9. She really knows what she is talking about. a good class
  10. Although it was Professor Clinton's first semester teaching, overall I thought she did an amazing job. Clinton definitely knows her stuff, and while this may not be the most exciting class if you arent a history major or interested in Asia, in general I found the class to be a useful one
