  2. Byers is great. Orgo can be a wonderful class and professor byers made the course thoroughly enjoyable. Of course, appreciating the material requires devotion.
  3. Orgo ended up being kind of fun because the environment among the students is very collaborative and friendly (at least in my year). Byers did a good job explaining concepts, although he was less organized than Bunt, as mentioned above. Byers' tests were very straightforward...until the final. Long and exhausting. But then it was over! Overall, good class.
  4. Byers was very helpful with office hours, but rather disorganized in his lecture style, especially as compared to Bunt.
  5. I enjoyed this class. Jeff is quirky and hilarious. However, some found his lectures to be somewhat disorganized, especially after having Bunt.
  6. orgo is a challenge no matter where you take it. Byers makes it ridiculously hard, and seems to love watching you struggle.
  7. Byers is harder to follow during lecture than Bunt, but I think the overall listening in lecture and book reading help to synthesize the material. Do the readings and book problems Sunday before the Monday quizzes.
  8. Although many regards orgoII as hard course, many others find it easy and the material presented just makes since. while several students did not do well on Byers' exams others frequently aced them. Perhaps this shows that the exams were not well made to differentiate between student to a greater degree. If you are just taking this class for Premed requirement then be ready to do some work, but if you are a science person and get science material easily this class should be an easy ride for you especially when compared to many other more challenging courses in the science departments.
  9. Orgo would have been absolutely fascinating if Professor Byers had connected the material we studied to its applications more often. It was interesting the way he taught it, but after a while, it started to feel like one reaction after another in endless succession, with little to distinguish them or make them stand out. I know that almost all of them have concrete applications in medicine, industry, or both, but he didn't focus on the "big picture" aspects enough. In general, Byers' teaching was solid and thorough, although he rarely paused for questions. He clearly understand the material in a great deal of depth, and his passion for it helps make lectures more interesting. The discussions were a little disappointing, though; Byers' half was always just taking a quiz, and it was rare to actually discuss the chemistry! Try not to take the last discussion section of the day, because everyone is a little tired by then... Overall an interesting course, and best taken with a chem buddy or two :)
  10. Tough course... Be aware that Byers isn't much of a partial-credit grader, unlike Bunt. His tests are easier, but he grades tougher. Fair enough. Though his mannerisms are a bit awkward, I find him great at explaining concepts and pinpointing issues that trip up students. Hang on every single word he says. When he points something out, highlight it in your notes. I realized the importance of this way too late in the course, but you should definitely hang on every word he says.
  11. Byers has his standards, and he will hold you to them like a marshmallow over hot coals. I suggest keeping up with his pace right off the bat, reading the book religiously, regardless of what?s going on in your other classes. I personally felt like his lectures could not stand alone at all. The book is fun, and so is Byers, once you start appreciating the material. If you can?t appreciate the dorkiness/quarkiness of the subject, then Byers will toast you, otherwise you can easily come out as the golden brown mallo that enjoyed and benefited from Byers? tests and Steve?s deep appreciation for cultural resonance. Mmmm marshmallows . . .
  12. Jeff is incredibley smart, a tad arrogant, and generally very helpful. If you want to take orgo, work until your brain is bleeding, but get a pretty good grasp on the material then take this class with Jeff. I personally would have never taken orgo for fun, but if you need this class as a pre-med major Jeff with help you learn what you need for the MCATS.
  13. Sometimes it's hard to stay on top of this class, because they just keep throwing more reactions at you while you still need to know everything up to that point. Jeff is a good teacher, knows everything about orgo, and is very fair. By the end of the second semester none of this matters though because you are too burnt out from a full year of mechanisms.
