Evaluation Comments for Spackman

  1. This is a philosophy class filled with neuroscience majors, so as a science person, I felt very comfortable in class despite this being my first philosophy class. The readings are long and complex, but Spackman does a great job of summarizing them in class. The discussion sections were the best part of the class because we were able to mull over the information.

  3. Spackman was great. The material wasn't really my thing, but he made sure that neuro majors felt comfortable in a phil class. I feel as though the phil majors in the class got frustrated, as the class was full of science majors, but I can't speak for them. If you're going to take a phil class, take one from Spackman.
  4. the first half of the class was great, the second part was painfully boring.
  5. the material is interesting, even for a neuroscience major. there are only 3 grades for the class, so make sure you do well on them. his average grading is a B, so if you want an A you'll need to work extra hard. he goes over all of the reading as they form the basis of the class material, so you don't really need to read on time to follow the class.
  6. I really love Professor Spackman. He is hilarious and so kind. He fields ridiculous philosophical questions from students in a really professional way. There is very little work because he gives out summaries of all of the readings in class. This course is a Neuroscience requirement and I was dreading it, but now I'm thinking of signing up for another Philosophy course.
  7. Spackman's very nice and open...good professor as well. He's great at making sure we understood the difficult concepts and readily accepts (whether or not he agrees w/) everyone's opinions. Some topics were fascinating, others boring and way too abstract for me. The same people spoke up every class, everyone else sat there. As a neuroscience major, it gave me a different perspective on several generally scientific concerns, but it was a little too much "philosophizing"...if that's what you like, this course is great. Even if not, it's a mind-opening experience anyway.
  8. As a neuroscience major, a lot of this class felt somewhat daunting and there are many rather complex theories that are covered throughout the class so don't even bother trying to keep them straight but overall the workload is manageable and Spackman is a good professor and nice to talk to during office hours.
  9. No advice.
