Evaluation Comments for Zupan P

  1. Professor Zupan is always enthusiastic about the subject, and clearly loves teaching her students. The beginning of the course was very slow, since we read guidebook after guidebook on the layouts of Rome, Florence, and Venice without a lot of discussion on how these cities are represented in contemporary artistic media. The second part of the course involved more films, novels, and discussions as well as an exciting culinary unit that livened class up considerably, so I felt that the end of the course was much more interesting than the beginning. It was far more work than I would have expected for a seminar, and Professor Zupan often seemed unaware of her students' plight when everyone felt overworked as a result of her class. If you enjoy group presentations, you are more likely to enjoy the class, since a significant portion of class is spent giving PowerPoint presentations on the reading. The material itself was often fascinating, and I learned better how to structure and revise essays. Take this class if you are very patient and are expecting a challenge.
  2. Zupan is a very nice prof, but gets sidetracked too much. The first part of the course you just read guidebooks about the three cities, and it is extremely boring. She gives way too much work, especially for a first year seminar. The class is not very structured at all. Do NOT take this class. If you are interested in Italy I'm sure there's a better one out there for you.
  3. If you are going to take this course, make sure you are really interested in the material being taught. There is lots of reading assigned, which can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning of the semester. Professor Zupan is great, but was unorganized when it came to assignments, readings, and returning graded work. Overall, the class was fascinating but met a lot and was very front-loaded.
