Evaluation Comments for Hart W

  1. Professor Hart is very nice, patient, and genuinely interested in his students. He's very good about re-explaining concepts you don't understand, and he's very open to students offering their own perspectives and challenging his views, which is really cool! Nonetheless, I still found this class pretty boring. It's a basic, run of the mill U.S. history course, which is important to learn if you're an American citizen or anyone who plans on spending a significant amount of time in the U.S., but I'd wager most people are probably fine from what they've already studied in high school. I thought the reading list was really random and disappointing honestly. There are a lot better books we could have spent our time on (learning about slavery without reading Frederick Douglass? Shame). Overall I would recommend this class perhaps to international students who are interested in the evolution of American culture, morality, and political ideology, because it's mostly just going to be a refresher for anyone who has already taken a standard high school U.S. history class. The workload is definitely reasonable, with 2 essays and 2 exams. There are weekly book readings for the discussion section, but I think most of us got by with skimming the material most weeks. Anyway, very nice and wonderful guy, but I found the course underwhelming. A lot of other students really enjoyed him though, so it might just be me (or the fact that it was an 8AM).

  3. Professor Hart is very friendly and his lectures are interesting. I was never bored in his class. There was a fair amount of reading for discussion section, but he chose some pretty interesting books that were a little off of the beaten path. Oftentimes our discussion sections ran over because we were having really good arguments, but no one in the class seemed to care. The exams weren't too bad and he was a fair grader for essays (a little on the tough side, but not unreasonable). One of the nicer professors I've had at Midd, very smart and helpful, and an extremely enjoyable class.
  4. Professor Hart is good at getting connections between past and present across. He picks books that touch on each era of American History effectively and both the lectures and discussions are conducted well. This course is not that difficult. There are two papers, exams and you read a book a week. Enjoyable, and a good intro course especially if you enjoy American history.
  5. Professor Hart is extremely nice, his lectures are interesting and the work load is not bad at all. Two 4-5 page papers, a 50 minute midterm and a final.
  6. This course is very informational and real. Prof. Hart tells history not how the students want to hear it, but how it actually happened. There are no cover ups, but all is exposed.
  7. Prof. Hart is one of the more approachable professors on campus. Provides interesting assignments
  8. Great professor, one of the nicest people here.
  9. Professor Hart is awesome - very nice and engaging. If you can, get your discussion section with him. Wasn't all that necessary to do the reading, although I enjoyed it for the most part. I've taken a few history classes here, and he teaches history how it should be taught. Great class.
  10. Prof Hart is an awesome professor. Loves what he is teaching. This class is interesting and not too hard, either. As people have mentioned, two 4-5 page papers, one midterm, and a final. One semi-short book to read each week, which you will talk about in class. Reading the books can give you a step up for the final, but (personally) don't think they are required if you pay attention. Definitely recommend any class that Hart teaches.
  11. Professor Hart's lectures are never boring, and he is very approachable, helpful, and clear. The workload is weekly book readings and two papers for the term if you're not a college writing student...not bad at all.
  12. Prof Hart is hands down my favorite teacher I've had here so far. I hated US History in high school, but I found myself enjoying it with Hart. He's a very smart guy and passionate about the material which made his lectures fascinating. Everyone wanted to participate in discussion section, he made us want to learn. He is a great guy, always available to help, and a very fair grader. You have to read one book a week which isn't too bad, he chooses good ones! Overall, a very interesting class with a very interesting professor. TAKE IT!
  13. Its a great course- easy college writing, only 4, 4page papers. Professor Hart is very kind and is always available to help you or clarify anything. Its a great class and valuable!
  14. If you like US history (1492-1865) you might like this class. I don't, and so I was not too interested in class. However, Professor Hart is a good professor and extremely helpful outside of class on a one-to-one basis.
