  1. Hector is the best professor at Midd! He will help you so much and is alway whiling to meet with you and talk about anything. This class helped me so much with my writing. It was my favorite class. It is super relaxed and interesting and Hector's tangents are amazing!

  3. This course is an anti-Middlebury course and you will either love it or hate it for that. Hector makes his students critically analyze the social and academic situations at Middlebury, which for many of the average Middkids (white, upper-middle class) is hard to swallow since we discussed white privilege and the issues of the utopia of "Club Midd". Secondly, there are no grades in the class. Hector lets you grade yourself at the end of the semester because he wants his students to not worry about evaluation when writing. He wants to encourage mistakes. This rubs a lot of people the wrong way as well because it goes against the general Middlebury notion of meritocracy, but I think it is extremely effective in allowing students to take academic risks and open themselves up more. Finally, Hector's courses are usually very diverse ethnically, socioeconomically, and racially so the discussion is much more relevant and varied. This class goes against the grain in a lot of ways, but if you take it and work hard, you will end up bettering your writing, learning a lot about the state of education in a America, learn to open yourself up to criticism, learn to take risks, and you will see Middlebury with a more critical eye. If this is something that you want, take this course. If ignorance is bliss, then I advise you don't.

  5. Hector Vila is a great teacher that truly helps you to improve your writing. I highly recommend this class for people who like discussion and enjoy talking about current issues. Pr. Vila is very chill and his classes are very friendly and enjoyable.
  6. Fantastic and insightful...well worth the effort, especially since it's a writing course and, well, you know how these can go...he makes it fun, plus its relevant

If you would like to learn to write I suggest that instead of blowing four thousand dollars by taking this course, go to amazon and enter "writing" into the search box and buying several of the listed books randomly. This invaluable technique will save you close to, well, a lot of money. Plus you won't have to hear Vila break down one day and spend twenty minutes ripping into George Bush, a classic moment I might add...
