Evaluation Comments for Siddiqi Y

  1. The reading material was dense, dry, boring, and repetitive. It felt like the first few books all had the same plot. I learned more about Indian history than literature in this class. Yumna teaches the class with the assumption that everyone has heavy background knowledge of India, and for most of us, that wasn't the case. The class atmosphere was super relaxed because no one really cared or felt the need to be competitive. Many people got through class discussions without doing the reading; it was very easy to b.s. in this class, which can be good if you're a slacker, but bad if you really like this class and are taking it seriously. I guess this class did help with transition into college writing, although essay prompts were given 3-4 days before a first draft was due. This was horrible timing and caused for crappy first drafts, and ultimately, crappy final drafts. More time was needed for writing. However, Yumna is super lenient with deadlines and gave lots of deadline extensions. It can be good if you like more time on your papers/bad if you want a steady structure of things.Overall, I didn't learn too much in this class.
  2. This class certainly grew on me as the semester passed. Don't expect to learn a lot about writing (even though that's sort of the purpose of a first year seminar) but do expect to be engaged by discussion with your peers. Yumna is understanding but very straight-edge (she now is tenured). Don't go too overboard creative on your essays but also don't go the overly simple route. Work with the writing tutor for your essays because Yumna often doesn't care too much to help you with yours unless you really make the effort. Reasonable books, if a bit wordy and dry. You learn a lot with Yumna but don't expect to be wow-ed every day.
