  3. Wang laoshi is terrible. You think she's fine in levels one and two, but this is where the monster comes out. She's merciless. An incredibly worthless class. I actually, honest to god, wish I had never taken Chinese. I would recommend not continuing--cut your losses.
  4. this class made me hate chinese. don't take it. if you want to go abroad to china, find a way around this class. anything is better.
  5. The other comments were completely accurate. The work load is misserable. I did summer school before this class, and it actually was the same amount of work plus three classes--and to make it worse the it's all busy work and completely useless. The grading is completely ridiculous. I find this class extremely discouraging, considering that no matter how much you study for tests and how much you work on essays, your ARE NOT GOING TO DO WELL. I'm so over wasting my time in Midd's Chinese department.
  6. Expect a good deal of work, it is basically like language school but you are also taking 3 additional classes.
  7. Wang laoshi is everyone's mother but her requests to "jia you!" aren't going to go very far in third year Chinese. The workload is tough considering the fact that you're taking 3 other classes. That said, you can't really skip this if you're going abroad in the spring. The course is needed to keep up your Chinese. Yes, lots of work, little pay off, but suck it up and take it. And don't disrespect Wang Laoshi, yo.
  8. If you have taken other Chinese classes before, this is basically a continuation of those, in style and material. The biggest difference I noticed between second and third year Chinese is the four essays we have to write. These essays are hard as Wang laoshi is trying to prepare you for going abroad. They are difficult and she is a hard grader, but she is always available to go over stuff with you and really wants everyone to succeed. Even though I may not be doing as well in the course as last year, I really feel like my Chinese will have improved a lot after taking this course and I know this will come in handy when I go to China. Expect work to go up when essays are due but the rest of it stays about the same, and we submitted an evaluation about halfway through the semester asking about pacing, etc., after which Wang laoshi slowed the pace down some so we would have more time to review each chapter. Wang laoshi is great and really passionate about having her students take Chinese, and anything she does is motivated by getting us to better our language skills.
  9. Well, the course was simply overwhelming. I could not keep up with the work. Wang Laoshi is a really nice person and she cares a lot about the students. The only problem is that she did not really listen to the students when they said they had too much work on their hands.
