Evaluation Comments for Wilson C

  1. Professor Wilson is, hands down, one of the best two or three professors that I've ever had. He's brilliant, hilarious and simply one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. He's also a fantastic public speaker, and he's honestly the only I'd ever consider auditing a class for. You hear some professors preach about "learning for learning's sake" and not worrying about the grades, but Prof. Wilson really believes in that. As long as you hand in the assignment and show that you've put in a good amount of thought, he'll acknowledge your effort. He knows his materials cover to cover, but that doesn't mean he isn't open to new ideas or interpretations--in fact, if you offer a new perspective on something he's interested in (e.g. a Walt Whitman poem), he's more likely to run with it and research it than reject it on the basis that he's the "expert." And as for the materials themselves, CKW mixes it up--you'll do everything from watch movies to analyze poems to memorize speeches by Abraham Lincoln--and that keeps things fresh. I'm not big into history, but practically all of the work we did was still really interesting. Two to three big quizzes--not a big deal--and two or three 4-5 page papers--again, not a big deal. If you're lucky enough to get into any class taught by CKW, you're in for a real treat.
  2. Professor Wilson clearly has a passion for what he teaches. He presents some of the most intriguing concepts supporting the broad foundation of the American Civil War, frequently calling attention to Winslow Homer's paintings and the plights and triumphs of the common soldier. All of the lectures kept me on the edge of my seat, despite running later in the evenings. Expect a few papers and recitations by Abraham Lincoln, which are fun and easy to handle. Professor Wilson puts everything into perspective, encouraging you to take what you want from his lectures. I found myself making more connections than ever, circling back to a point in his analysis of some topic or painting. It's a great time with Professor Wilson and I fully recommend this class to all who wish to learn about the great Civil War in depth and with a great professor.
  3. Professor Wilson is by far the best professor I have had so far at Middlebury. Although his classes are usually at night and three hours long, I never found myself ticking off the minutes wating for the end of class. All of the material he presents is fascinating, and he really has a passion for what he does. He's incredibly funny, and extremely easy to talk to. You absolutely must take at least one class with him before while at Middlebury.
