  3. I absolutely love Beyer. This class was amazing and I felt like he really cared how we did (even though he loves to pick on everyone). Take this class!
  4. Beginning Russian has been my favorite class at Middlebury so far. The department is AMAZING and every single one of the Russian professors is awesome and unique in their own way. Beyer is pretty much the man.
  5. Russian is awesome. Beyer is one of the coolest teachers I've ever had. People should definitely take Russian.
  6. Be ready to be degraded, but well-taught
  7. Professor Beyer is awesome. I don't think I would make it through the morning class without his high energy and enthusiasm.
  8. Beyer is Crazy. Take Russian. Best Department in Middlebury. Put the effort in and it is rewarding
  9. The whole department is quirky and fun, despite the difficulty of the material. Do the assignments when they're assigned and you'll be perfectly fine grade-wise. Don't worry about grades in this course. Just have fun and learn and the A will come. Don't overstudy, but do put at least 30-60 minutes of review in at the dorm before you head to class. Joking with the professor and asking cultural, historical or literary questions are all great ways to connect with the endearing prof. Oh, and if you're easily offended you should toss that out the window if you can. Russian is a humbling but very rewarding experience. This class will be your family for years to come, even if you drop out after the first year!
  10. Beyer is a very good teacher, but he can be kind of intimidating, especially in the beginning. Some of his comments in class were uncomfortable, but everyone was equally picked on.
  11. Excellent class... Russian can be demanding at times but is certainly worth the effort.
  12. great class..great proff..very entertaining...sergei and beyer switch off and although they have different teaching styles they are both great..
  13. The thing you have to understand about Beyer is that everything he says and does in class is basically an act. At heart he's a really nice guy who cares about his students, but on a day-to-day basis he might shout at you if you mess something up or forget your homework. He's also pretty degrading, but usually in a funny way. If you can ditch your ego and engage with him, you'll do well. He plays the role of the "tough love" prof. in the Beyer/Smorodinskaya pair, which gives the class some great variety. I agree with the person who said you will be degraded but well-taught. I learned so much in one semester of Russian with Beyer, and I was constantly in stitches, too - the guy's hilarious. He's also incredibly knowledgeable (he's also fluent in German) with a serious knowledge of linguistics. He had this joke with our class where if we weren't understanding something or we were being rowdy, he'd say he needed a bottle of Bailey's. At the end of the semester, we all pooled $20 and a senior went and got him a bottle of Bailey's that we put a bow on and gave him on the last day of class. He seemed really touched, so it's proof he DOES have a heart. If you want to learn Russian, want to work hard and laugh hard while doing so, and can accept that you might get called a radio (or worse) by the professor and life will go on, definitely take this class.
  14. Russian 101 with Beyer is a rite of passage for Russian students. Not for the shy or easily offended -- dealing with Beyer's antics requires confidence and thick skin. And Russian's no walk in the park -- be prepared to put some serious time into learning the language outside of class. But if you do, and you can handle the intimidating and unsympathetic professor, you'll learn a ton! And you'll have fun to boot. AND you'll get a good grade -- Beyer is lenient, probably because the classes themselves can get so intense. Take Russian!
  15. Beyer has great energy and enthusiasm. In a way, he's the "bad cop" in the Beyer/Davydov pair, which is actually really refreshing. A lot of Midd professors are willing to stroke students' egos. Beyer isn't. He is also a really brilliant scholar; his knowledge of linguistics peeks out sometimes in side comments during class. The course is a nice, rigorous intro to Russian. Not that much homework, but still felt like I learned a lot.
  16. Take Russian! It's amazing how much you learn in this class. Beyer and Davydov have incredible energy which makes the difficult material seemingly easy in the early morning. Lots of fun, highly valuable class.
