Evaluation Comments for Monod P

  2. The material is a little bit dry but only because of the micro-level historical analysis, but Monod is a fantastic lecturer and knows his stuff. He wrote the textbook! A bit of a hard grader, but not unreasonable, especially if you go for help. Great, knowledgeable prof.
  3. Professor Monod was one of the better lecturers I've had at Middlebury. He was always interesting, and new how to keep a long lecture moving. He was an extremely approachable person, and was very helpful with paper topics. That said, I had to work for the grade I got--he was tough, but challenged me in a way that was productive and got me to learn a lot. I came away from the class with a very solid grasp of British history in this period and would recommend this class to any serious history student.
  4. Monod is a great professor, very enthusiastic. I thought papers were graded pretty hard but class was always interesting.
  5. Paul Monod is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are super interesting and inspire students to take notes even though it is unnecessary for the class. He is an extremely tough grader, but is very willing to help any student who asks for it. He was willing to read complete drafts of papers and edit them before you turned them in. He is also extremely intelligent and funny. I recommend this, or any of his classes, to all Middlebury students.
  6. Monod is a great professor. He makes the subject come alive. A harsh grader and hard to get a hold of outside of class, he really cares about your work and is always willing to help.
  7. The class is very difficult, but worth both the work and the early wake-up call if you take it with this professor. Even if you can't take it, audit the lectures. The course does not have an official textbook which can make keeping some of the facts straight difficult, especially if you don't know how to take good notes during lectures. Monod's lectures are strictly lectures, but the hour flies in between the impressions he does of Winston Churchill, etc, the cartoons he makes on the board and the slide projections he brings on the topic. Monod knows his material and more importantly, knows how to present it in a variety of ways to keep you interested. The reading covers the range from dry to interesting, but overall the mnaterial is fascinating. Make sure you get reading done for discussion: this class is difficult to BS in if you haven't.
