Evaluation Comments for Morsman, A.

  1. Fantastic professor. She did a great job of leading discussion sections, and lectures were well-delivered and still incorporated student input. Readings were interesting and focused more on the cultural history of the Civil War, which added another layer of understanding to this vitally important period of American history. Best class I've taken here so far -- you have to work hard, but it's well worth it.

  4. Amy morsman is an amazing teacher, her lectures move fast so be prepared to write quickly in class. There are a ton of books and e-res articles, but she does give you time in discussion to talk about them.
  5. Amy Morsman is an awesome teacher - really nice and incredibly smart. she expects a lot from her students, and is a tough grader. huge part of the grade is discussion participation, and you can't get away with not reading. one thing i didnt like - she talks really fast in her lectures, and so i think a lot of people felt labored because her powerpoints were pretty bare and she just cruises along. if you're looking for an easy class, this isn't for you. if you are interested in the civil war, though, definitely take it. i loved it.
  6. Be prepared for lower paper grades, but the exams are easy.
  7. Amy Morsman is an incredible professor. Her lectures were engaging, and even at 9 a.m. they kept me on the edge of my seat. The information presented in lecture was not a regurgitation of prior readings or other material we already knew, but rather she used lecture times to present valuable and truly interesting material. Her use of lecture time is perhaps the best I have seen at Midd so far -- she will never waste your time, neither with class nor with readings. The assigned readings were interesting, worthwhile, and unique. Discussions were useful and well-run. All that being said, you will work hard in this class, but your efforts will be rewarded. She values participation and effort. However, if you struggle, she is understanding and will definitely work to help you in any way. Studying history with Morsman helped me decide to become a history major.
  8. Morsman is truly an incredible professor. The course is set up so that reading is only due on Fridays, which is very nice. Preparing for discussion sections is a must, you have to spread the reading out during the week or you will never get it done the night before. Doing the reading (or most of it) is a necessity to get a good participation grade. While Morsman is tough, she is also very down-to-earth and kind. If you go to her with problems, she is more than understanding and very helpful. She is the kind of professor that knows when to be tough and when to give students some leeway. The course material is excellent and the readings are truly intriguing. You will learn a lot of material but also how to become a better student (writer, reader, and speaker).
  9. Morsman is a tough grader but a great lecturer and facilitator of discussion. She is also a really cool person and always available for help outside of class. Be warned: there is usually a lot of reading and participation counts for 25% of your final grade!
  10. Amy Morsman's Civil War and Reconstruction is possibly the class I am most pleased to have taken at Middlebury. Her lectures are well-prepared and fascinating without seeming rehearsed. I thought she did an excellent job selecting the readings. None of them felt useless to me; they all added different dimensions to the material being covered. If you do plan to take this class, however, be sure that you actually want to take it and participate. Class participation was 25% of the grade, and she definitely does not just hand it to you. Grading was tough but definitely fair; hardwork is rewarded. Morsman may initially seem intimidating, but she is really just a professor deeply involved in the study and teaching of her material. I also found her to be one of the most available professors I have encountered, even if it is just to bounce ideas off of her. The only thing important to take this class is to make sure you actually want to study the material. It seems fine for a non-history major (coming from a science major).
  11. Amy Morsman?s Civil War and Reconstruction is one of few the classes I truly regret taking at Middlebury. Although she does a fairly good job of going through the lectures you should be prepared for some of the harder grading on campus. Discussion is worth a whopping 25% of the final grade so not doing the reading is simply not an option, but at least this can bring up your final grade after some of those low paper grades. Also the final paper is one of the more difficult and frustrating papers that I have ever been assigned at Middlebury. Unless you really really enjoy the Civil War and Reconstruction I would strongly recommend against taking this class.
  12. Amy Morseman is a great profossor. She does a good job of leadind discussions and making them interesting. All of the tests were completely reasonable--if you study you'll do well.
