  2. Don't take it. SO boring. I honestly don't know what happened in this class. Wyatt is a nice dude but he assigns an absurd amount of reading that nobody does, but then he assumes your complete knowledge of all the nuances of those readings. Tests are hard and the papers suck too. Just do not take it unless you absolutely have to.
  3. If you're interested in China and the foundation of Chinese Confucian thought, by all means take this class. Don't just take it to fulfill a requirement, though.
  4. The lecture style of this class consists of the professor reading from a few pages of pre-written lecture notes for about 60 minutes, and then 15 minutes of questions/discussion. He will occasionally pause to explain an image on the powerpoint, and/or the origin of a Chinese character, however it's mostly listening to him reading. The material is interesting and very valuable, however I found it difficult to retain the information presented in that format. The reading ranges from dry to very enjoyable, but is very fair in difficulty and amount.
  5. Professor Wyatt is an expert on Confucianism, but being an expert doesn't mean that the class will be anything special. Though I think that the material presented was valuable and worthwhile, I found the class very hard to sit through. The exams were arbitrary, some of the information that appeared on them really came out of nowhere. The class is slow-moving and relatively unengaging. I feel bad being too hard on the class, though, because Wyatt is a real character and a nice man. If you're interested in Confucianism, take the class--you will learn a lot, certainly.
  6. While I sometimes found the lectures read straight from a paper boring, I cannot argue with the fact that the course was effective and stimulating without being unnecessarily hard. The format seemed to work and Wyatt is certainly knowledgeable, reasonable, and a decent guy.
