  1. Professor Matthias is a tough grader, always seeking to improve your writing and ideas. This class, however, was not so much based on academic ability in the German language sphere as it was in ability to function in situations calling for impromptu theater style thinking on the fly. I was surprised at how much this approach to theater within the broader context of foreign language learning helped me to become more comfortable with speaking in German. We put on a play production, rehearsing for the last six weeks of the course. This meant we had no real homework after the first six weeks, and even those we had next to none. The course was not an academic challenge other than a couple short assignments and two papers (midterm and final). If you get a chance to do a German Theater class with Bettina, go for it. She's enthusiastic and good to work with for theater stuff. I wouldn't necessarily recommend taking a purely academic (writing-based) course with Bettina if you want a good grade though. She knows when what you're writing is bs and she will call you out in her comments, then grade accordingly. Since this is not pure academic work, by all means do German Theater! Best course I took this semester, great class dynamic (since we're all in a cast and have our roles), good for improvement in speaking German, and best of all very little work.
