  3. McWilliams is one of the best profs I've had at Middlebury. Extremely enthusiastic, friendly, and encouraging. She made the reading come alive, and it would have been boring without her at times. Workload is pretty light as this is an intro literature course, and the challenge is very appropriate for an intermediate level course. Definitely worthwhile. And no grammar. Finally.
  4. Readings were sometimes boring, but isn't that the case in most literature classes? Professor McWilliams is very encouraging and helpful, and, in the end, the class was worthwhile.
  5. This class seemed like a HUGE jump from 205. Semi-interesting material, yet the papers were really difficult in comparison to the one page essays we did in 205 that were completely graded on grammar (grammar doesn't seem to matter at ALL on these papers, its totally about ideas). Also, I got the impression that the French seem to write "thesis papers" differently than how we were taught, and Barbaud-McWilliams didn't really attempt to explain what the differences were. An alright class if you are self-motivated to speak in class.
  6. I loved this class. McWilliams is entertaining to listen to for an hour and is a very kind grader. It's a bit intimidating at first, but you get used to the format. If you take it, push yourself to talk as much as possible during class. It's easy to be silent.
  7. This class is okay. It's definitely not the best class I've ever taken at Middlebury, but it isn't the worst one, either.
  8. the readings are long but discussions are very interesting
  9. With the exception of one or two, the readings were enjoyable and not overly difficult. Conversation was good and the class is interesting if you are into French literature.
  10. The readings were really good, and the professor was cheerful, energetic and friendly. The midterm and final are easy if you know the literature. I didn't feel my oral skills (coming out of 205) were quite up to the level of the discussions, as we had students who were practically native french speakers and kids who had taken french for many years. McWilliams grades fairly, and focuses on your ideas more than your french skills which was nice, yet in discussions she sometimes shuts down your ideas if she has different views. All in all a good class and a good professor.
  11. This course is much better than 205 in my experience. The readings are nothing exciting, but there poems we read are good, and there are a couple of novels that most students also enjoyed. Professor Barbaud-McWilliams did her best to try to wake us up at 9am. She is very enthusiastic, a fair grader, and one of my favorite professors in the department.
  12. The class is okay, but doesn't really help with grammar, and you need to make an effort to speak during discussion. Most of the readings were pretty boring.
