  1. Prof. Fitzsimmons really enjoys teaching this topic and you can tell he is truly passionate about it. It takes a little while to actually get to the religion aspect of the course since there is a brief archeology section at the beginning, but once the class hits mesoamerica its really interesting. The readings for the beginning of the course aren't bad but the incan readings are really long, 150 pages a night for about 3 or 4 weeks, the good thing is the response papers aren't too difficult and you can just incorportate some of this information, essentially he just wants to see that you understood main concepts. The exams aren't bad either since he gives out a review sheet with possible IDs and essay questions. overall a pretty easy course that is really interesting. I would definitely take this class again.
  2. The class comes from a definite archaeological perspective--that's what Fitzsimmons does. Parts of the material, particularly in his area of expertise, the Maya, are fascinating, but the reading's generally dense (and there's a lot of it) and lectures are long. You can get by in the class by taking decent notes and reading material as you need to for exams and essays. Fitzsimmons knows his stuff and is entertaining in the classroom, but I expected the course to be a bit more engaging.
  3. This class was very enjoyable! Professor Fitzsimmons is an amazing professor; he is passionate about the subject and loves teaching! He is very friendly and approachable, and his grading is VERY fair. There were a lot of assigned readings, but you don't have to do all of them because most of the material is covered in class. There wasn't much work either - three 3-page response papers, a midterm, and a final (for the exams he gives you the IDs and essay questions beforehand!) Overall the class setting was very relaxed, and I learned a lot. I would DEFINITELY recommend this class!
