  2. If you are prepared to work hard, this is an amazing class. There is a large amount of reading assigned and none of it easy, but I really appreciated all the first person texts--rather than reading ABOUT thinkers, we actually read their works directly. To me, this showed that the professor had a lot of respect and confidence in his students' abilities. Or at least high expectations, which I find entirely appropriate at a school like Middlebury. As for the professor, Stearns is easily one of my favorites. He's incredibly knowledgeable for being so young, having spent time in the Middle East and possessing near fluent Arabic language skills. His lectures followed a clear Power Point presentation and worked to clarify and expand upon the readings, rather than just reguritate them. Essays and tests were tough, but, like I said, you just need to be prepared to work hard. To the people who mention Stearns' "deathly" sarcasm on another site, I say buck up. I found him to be fun and witty--I will definitely be taking more classes with him in the future.
