Evaluation Comments for Carletti S

  1. Class time was never boring, Prof. Carletti is one of the most animated and also one of the smartest professors Middlebury has. She expects a great deal from her students, thus those found slacking off will not be tolerated. The class deals with contemporary Italian history which many students don't often get a chance to really study in depth, which, for students serious about continuing their Italian language studies, whether abroad or at home, is really an important part of understanding Italy and her people today. There is work that simply cannot be put off almost every night for the class, and a fair amount of time must be spent on the class per week. I would only recommend this class to those students who are serious in pursuing the study of Italian language and culture.
  2. Carletti is a top-notch lecturer, teacher, and facilitator of discussion. She makes the class very interesting and engaging - I looked forward to class each day. Carletti is especially brilliant at drawing connections between the historical past and the present, so potentially boring material becomes relevant and worth discussing in her class. She is also extremely helpful and generous with her time in office hours, taking pains to make sure that students truly understand what they need to know. Grazie, Prof.ssa Carletti!
  3. Italian class has definitely gotten kind of tough at this point. You're not noticing significant improvement in your abilities anymore, and all of a sudden you're actually reading and writing for real. Carletti is sharp as a hawk--she will notice if you didn't do the reading, and you will feel like a worm--but also funny and animated. Required if you want to go to Italy or continue in the Italian department; if you don't want to do either of the above then I probably wouldn't recommend taking it, seeing as it's a lot of work and somewhat frustration and by now you've learned the language itself, it's just a matter of learning it well.
