Evaluation Comments for Cavanaugh C

  1. Discussion-oriented class with little outside reading. Generally laid back with interesting films. Good overview of Japanese film, which I hadn't been exposed to before.
  2. Overall, I don't have much to say about this class in and of itself- it's not a bad course if you're looking for something laid-back, as Prof. Cavanaugh is really quite flexible most of the time in terms of the direction of discussion and the format of the class. She sometimes is fond of imposing her oppinions on students, but this is a fault that any teacher can fall prey to, and it is not usually too disruptive. My issue comes with the fact that this is one of the two classes in the Japanese department that is not cross-listed. That essentially means that everyone in the department will be taking it at some point or another, and minors must (theoretically) take both. The fact that both are taught by Cavanaugh-sensei, who is also the department chair, makes one wonder if she is purposely structuring the requirements in order to get more students to take her classes. I appologize if this was not her intent, but encourage her to loosen the restrictions on counting cross-listed courses towards major/minor requirements. We will also hopefully see some new blood in the Japanese department next year when a new teacher is hired.
