  2. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this course. Professor Clinton is relatively new at Middlebury and I found her to be a very good professor. Initially, she does not come off as super friendly, but as the class goes on, you can tell that that is not the case. The material presented was actually very interesting (I'm an english major). Professor Clinton is also not the toughest grader (she is very fair), which is a plus.
  3. Modern East Asia is a great way to fulfill both the AAL and HIS requirements in one go. Definitely ask Prof. Clinton to look at the 1st draft of your essays because she is a tough grader. Also, participate a lot in the discussions; it is easy as long as you do the readings and it really boosts your grade. Also, watch for her interesting sense of humor.
  4. Not very comprehensive but if you want to know the basic historical framework of modern East Asia then this class is for you. Professor Clinton expects hard work on essays and usually makes her exams a little less involved than the essays. Discussions are relaxed.
  5. don't
  6. Took it to knock out requirements. Overall not a bad class. Prof. Clinton takes the class seriously -- she does not hand out As too easily -- which caught me a bit off guard, but was easily adjusted too. Almost no necessary reading. Solid lecturer. Assessment was 2 exams, 2 papers, and a final. Don't be afraid of this class, even if you are just looking to fulfill requirements, but do realize it's not an easy A.
  7. If u want a straightforward class, take it with professor clinton (it is not very easy though) the exams cover materials from lectures (the final is more comprehensive than in-class midterm). Work hard on ur papers anyway as she expects a lot.
  8. If you take quality lecture notes, then the reading becomes unnecessary.
  9. an easy intro class, take it if you know nothing about east asia history
  10. Professor Clinton's lectures are straight forward and have a lot of interesting information but she reads from her notes which makes them kind of dry. This class is also really really broad, which is often frustrating but I guess that's the nature of a 100-level course. Overall an average class. I learned a lot but it didn't blow me away.
