Evaluation Comments for Barrow, I.

  1. I'm not much of a history person, but I enjoyed this class. Professor Barrow is a pretty straightforward lecturer in class but really takes the conversation where students want to go during discussion sections. The homework is off-and-on: one week there will be two full books to read, the next you'll get a break... but I enjoyed most of the things we read. I appreciated his trying to approach history from many perspectives: films, novels, primary sources, academic literature... it made the class more accessible. There is almost no difference in workload between taking this class as a CW and normally. CW students have to write their essays two days earlier for two of the three essays (there is also one exam towards the beginning of the course). However, editing the papers with him means that CW students are likely to get better grades on their papers anyway. There is no final, which I appreciated.
  2. I really enjoyed this class. Professor Barrow really makes the class interesting by using a variety of books and genres to explore India's history. In addition to a few general history texts we read several fictional works by Indian writers and their intrepretation of the Partition. Additionally, there were mini cultural lessons at the beginning of many classes so we got an overall sense of India's religion, politics, and traditions.
  3. Not my cup of coffee
  4. Professor Barrow is somewhat soft-spoken in demeanor but he is quite sharp on his material and teaches it in a way that feels more like listening to an interesting conversation than a lecture. The readings are all very interesting and are not boring textbooks. I like discovering things that I took for granted I knew and India surely was one of them, if you want to know more about it I recommend this course.
