  1. carrie reed is quite an interesting professor. she is the type of person that i would love to get to know outside of the classroom. it is definitely worth it to take a course with her because of her uniqueness. there is a lot of reading for this course, and sometimes the assignment due dates stack up. But if you prepare yourself for it, you should be able to manage and still enjoy the readings. i found them to be for the most part interesting.
  2. This class was amazing. It's one of the best courses that I have taken at Middlebury, and Carrie is smart, inspiring, and very helpful. I knew very little about myths from different cultures before I took this class, so the reading definitely offered me many new and interesting perspectives. The discussions were always interesting, and writing the response papers before the class helped organize the thoughts. Carrie is incredibly intelligent and often offer new and thought-provoking insights. Listening to other people's opinions was also a good experience. The learning curve is rather steep for this class. So if you are looking for some exciting courses that you can remember after graduating from Middlebury, this is it. I said so because when I was writing a Spanish paper on myths two years after taking the class, I realized I could remember a lot of concepts learnt in this course. Almost none of my other classes had that effect. Believe me, some of the ideas behind the myths could just change your way of thinking without you even realizing it!
  3. This was a weird class. Professor Reed was fantastic--she was really laid back, funny, insightful, and brilliant. But she spoke for a combined 30 minutes all term, leaving the discussion to the students, most of whom made uninspired comments on hastily done reading to boost their participation grades. Some of the readings were also really boring (mainly translations of different worldide myths) if you weren't in the right frame of mind, which also made the required reading responses a slog. People mostly BSed those, too. We had 3 or 4 papers, all of which I got good grades on, but only because I am a good writer, not because I wrote anything truly intelligent. So if you are looking for an easy FYS with an awesome Professor and are willing to put up with a lot of BSing, this is the class for you. I really learned a lot on the whole from Professor Reed--about myths and about life in general--and definitely gained new perspective on the world.
  4. I Absolutely loved this course! Prof Reed is truly adorable =] One thing to keep in mind in this course is that Reed takes the seminar aspect of the course very seriously and will expect everyone to make the discussions work. The secret is to not read everything thoroughly, but to commit to skimming for 3 or 4 insights (ends of chapters are a good place to start) to spark a response paper. She does NOT grade harshly on papers (in her seminars), but it is imperative that you write them. Oh, and watch The Power of Myth movies in a group at the library at 1.5x speed because Campbell talks so incredibly slow.
