Evaluation Comments for McWilliams J

  1. McWilliams is quite difficult, especially for a course like Nature's Meanings. He grades the course as an English course, but lectures mostly on context regarding the works we read and only discusses the actual works in discussion. Papers are graded with a high standard, but still considerably fairly. Exams are also challenging, but not insanely difficult. What really kills grades in this course is discussion; it is worth 25% of the grade, and he assigns the grade based on whether or not he remembers you speaking in discussion. This essentially means quantity of contributions over quality of contributions. In my case, I contributed insightful comments once or twice in each discussion, but only got a B (he writes your discussion grade on each of your papers). My biggest piece of advice is to bs your way through discussion, especially if you feel like you have little to say during discussion.
  2. You don't expect a course called "Nature's Meanings" to be very rigorous. McWilliams makes it worth your time - no journaling or ranty environmentalism here (actually, I think you had the option of turning in a journal as your final exam, but it was more like a response paper to the nine or ten books we read throughout the course). It wasn't as easy as I expected, but was more rewarding.
