  1. One of the best courses I have ever taken at Middlebury. J West is an engaging professor and has a quality of getting the whole class absolutely immersed in the course for the whole month. Discussions were intensely interesting and the readings were great. He is a demandind proffesor though. A lot of writing is involved. But totally worth it.
  2. This class ruined my j-term. I looked at the other reviews on middkid and thought, "well, who cares if it's a lot of work," but the class was terrible. The ideas were amazing, but West is off-putting and strange. He shows slides for hours a day and then gives you reading assignments that cause you to miss out on everything else on campus. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
  3. The material is interesting, but James West talks too much about himself and not enough about Nietzsche
  4. James West is an awesome professor. Tons of reading, but it's J-Term so you'll have enough time to finish it. A huge percentage of your grade is participation, so be sure to get involved in class discussions. Overall, this was a great class, and I learned a lot. I think some of the subject matter encourages students to be competitive and pretentious at times, but once you get past that, discussions can be really good. Great class.
  5. It was definitely my favourite class at Middlebury so far. Although the class hours are long and the homework is unfinishable, it is definitely worth it. We discuss some fascinating concepts in this class. Prof. West is amazing; not only was he great in class, but he also takes the time to have breakfast at the grille with the students and that's when the really interesting conversations are. But if you enroll in the class, be prepared to work hard. I would say the class average 200 pgs of reading per class (about 600 per week), and lots and lots of writing. But don't be scared off by that, it is worth it.
  6. Nietzsche in Historical Perspective is a great class! The reading assignments were hellish.
