Evaluation Comments for Bunt

  1. You have to put the time in to do well. Bunt's lectures are organized and helpful. On his exams you need to know everything, but if you do all the recommended problems you'll be in good shape. The length of labs can be annoying, be prepared to come in out of class quite a bit. Orgo is just as much about how well you can manage your time as it is about how intuitive the material is for you...don't fall behind.
  2. Great class. Make sure you understand what you missed on each test. I would recommend reading the textbook once before class start because the material is so extensive.
  3. No Comment
  4. keep up with the work and enjoy it
  5. great class, not for everyone though
  6. I came into Organic Chemistry expecting the hardest class of my college career. Since then, I've learned not to believe the hype. The Chemistry professors at Middlebury understand that beating students over the head with banal factiods and giving them arbitrarily bad grades does not help. Rick Bunt understood and respected his students and made the class as enjoyable as one could expect. This class helped me decide on becoming a Chem major.
  7. Its orgo, so its rough. Stay on top of the work, do the recommended problems the week they're assigned, do the extra recommended problems before the exams, and stay on top of tranynham! This is a course where every grade is exactly what you deserve, you get out what you put in. Rick's very approachable, knowledgable, and helpful.
  8. this class is very challenging. there is a lot of work, but if you keep up with it you will do fairly well in the class. the notes in lecture are borderline OCD, but they make for very compartmentalized learning easy for access when studying. do not get discouraged by the lab grades, the fluctuate depending on his mood.
  9. Try your best to keep up with the reading and do the problems suggested!!! Not kidding, do not fall behind in this class or else you will pay for it. Bunt is a fantastic professor.
  10. Organic Chemistry is pretty infamous. It is known as one of the hardest classes at Middlebury, and it definitely requires a lot of work. But Rick Bunt is the man, and he does his best to make it go down as easily as possible. I will have to say that I really didn't appreciate him (and the consistency with which he wrote out all of his equations on the board using the same colors throughout the semester and the Section headings with which he paralleled each section in lecture with each section in the book) until I had a different teacher for the second semester... but ya, if are going premed and you have to take orgo, take it with Bunt. You have to put in the work (which sometimes is an insane amount) but it pays off. Overall, though Orgo gets more flack than it deserves. I really walked away from the course feeling like I learned something tangible (and that I had accomplished something worthwile). It made me realize why I had to take Chem 103 and 104. Anyway just one tip if you are taking this course: MAKE SURE TO GO OVER YOUR EXAMS WITH HIM AND LEARN WHAT YOU DID WRONG... VERY OFTEN THE QUESTIONS ON SUBSEQUENT EXAMS ARE IDENTICAL TO PREVIOUS EXAMS!!!!
  11. take it if you need it, and bunt is great... but the course itself is really hard, don't take it on a whim
  12. a really tough class, i would not take it unless you have to. bunt is an awesome professor, but the material is just hard. stay caught up with the readings and do all the problems he suggests and it wont be so bad. study hard for the exams! there are 9 or 10 short quizzes throughout the semester; study for those too, because even though they might not seem like much, they add up at the end and count for 15% of your final grade.
  13. This course takes a lot of your time but there is no one better to take this course with than with Bunt! Keep up with the reading and the problems and you'll do fine on the quizzes and tests! Bunt is amazing and probably the best teacher I've ever had!!!
  14. My biggest piece of advice: find a group you're comfortable with and study with them. I'm usually not very productive in groups but when you have people to hash out concepts with, it really makes it easier. And less painful. If you learn the concepts in 241, next semester will be a lot easier. Bunt is wonderful, he definitely made the class more manageable and enjoyable.
  15. The class is especially tough in the beginning but once you get the hang of reactions and nomenclature, things are much easier to understand. The key is to keep on top of the material. The book is a really good at explaining everything discussed in class, but if youre not motivated to do problems on your own, you're pretty much out of luck for the exams.
  16. Let me just start by saying orgo is hard. Bunt is a good professor and explains everything well, but we moved through everything fairly quickly. Its definitely necessary to put the time in outside of class. Read the assigned chapters. Do the assigned problems. I repeat, read the chapters and do the problems. They aren't mandatory, but don't get behind. You'll thank yourself at the end of the semester. The first midterm isn't that bad, but the second has a lot more material. The final is very intimidating... but if you keep up your work you should be fine, i promise!
  17. Professor Bunt is a great guy and very willing to help with any confusion. To keep up you really need to read the textbook because Bunt tends to teach on the assumption that you already know the material that the text talks about. However, I found that Professor Bunt did not add much more than you get from the textbook reading and practice problems alone which makes going to lecture not that useful at all. It is very important to do the practice problems and study for the quizzes (all together they are worth as much as a midterm)
  18. If you're taking this class, it's probably because you have no choice. If you suck it up, get the work done and don't procrastinate, you might actually enjoy the class. Rick is awesome. He will make the material easy for you if you put in the work.
  19. Im not sure if this is an honor code violation, but watever, here we go: The final is ridiculous. A good chunk is verbatim material from previous exams/quizes, but most of it is post-2nd midterm material, and is super hard. Great class, but potential GPA killer. I'm no longer going to be able to attend med school because of this class. Sorry about the rant, but Im not the best chem student and studying 40 hours didnt pay off, which is seriously frustrating and im hoping to save some other ppl from this.
  20. I hated this class for the first 3 or 4 weeks of the semester, but ended up loving it overall. Rick Bunt is a great professor who makes organic chemistry fun. He finds unique ways to teach difficult concepts. All the tests were reasonable, except the final which was a little bit more difficult than it needed to be. This person also suggested: The final should not be so difficult. It was excessively hard.
