  3. People definitely have widely differing ideas of Oster's teaching style and subject matter, as is clearly noted in the first two questions. Personally, I really enjoyed 2nd semester lab. First semester was more tedious and tiring, second semester more fun, easygoing, and relevant. Oster is a spokesperson for the true liberal arts education and tries to help our educations be a bit closer to that ideal by lecturing about agriculture, industry, history, etc and their (loose) relation to chemistry. As long as your lab reports contain the details (as well as some interesting information/history/movie quotes/etc) you'll be fine. I actually learned to like piecing together ridiculous lab reports about things unrelated to chemistry...
  4. Prof. Oster could be better described as a history prof. He approaches the subject from every angle possible except the chemical one. Do not expect to learn much chemistry in this lab beyond what you've learnt in orgo1. If you, however, like to talk about history and philosophy and not much about chemistry then you should be fine, as mere interest in those field is enough to get you A's on the labs without much need to learn chemistry.
  5. Great lab! I wouldn't have survived all the repetitive mechanism lectures with Byers if it hadn't been for Oster's enthusiastic, quirky, fascinating lab discussions and his way of making even orgo lab seem easy and fun after you get the hang of it. The labs we did were really interesting (making nylon, esters, pesticides, sulfa drugs...) and clearly had real-world utility. His organization of the class was impeccable, and everyone appreciated his sense of humor. The lab TAs were always helpful, and so was Professor Oster. If you're having trouble in lecture, the lab component of orgo may just be what saves you!
