Evaluation Comments for Nelson M

  1. This course was incredibly fascinating and eye-opening, but also very difficult. As always in a Peggy Nelson course, you will have to contend with lots and lots of work. Expect to read about a book a week, on which you'll have to write a detailed response paper. You will also be faced with the overwhelming task of writing a Peggy Nelson term paper, which she expects to be a quasi-mini-thesis. You'll be preparing for it all semester with little assignments, but it will still hit you like a ton of bricks during finals week, so try to avoid taking this during your final semester of college. Classes are totally discussion-based, and you will be expected to know the argument and methodology of every piece of reading. On the bright side, you will learn more important information in this class than in just about any other class at Midd. Honestly, this will be one of the most valuable learning experiences of your college career - it will open your eyes to the problems and perceptions surrounding race, poverty, and education. So I would recommend it even though I wanted to shoot myself several times throughout the semester. Still, keep in mind that it's a 400-level seminar, so you'd probably be overly ambitious to take it if it's not required by your major. Also keep in mind that Peggy is one of the more difficult graders on campus, so be sure to hone your reading, writing and discussion skills before taking her class.
  2. Very interesting and great professor. For your final project, do something other than a paper!
  3. this is the best course i've taken at middlebury. its actually relevant to life outside of the middlebury bubble. prof. nelson is great at leading discussions and making thought provoking questions.
  4. everyone should take this course. prof. nelson is amazing (though she doesn't lecture much in this course). readings and discussions were excellent...but you won't find any easy answers.
