Evaluation Comments for Affolter, T

  1. Legendary professor and a class that will almost certainly become legendary itself. It's an eye opening experience. This class really does achieve the lofty end many classes at Midd claim to: it will make you question the assumptions you made about your world before coming to Midd and expose you to the all sorts of injustices you overlooked. Moreover, it teaches you how to continue this process of "unpacking ideas" (credit: Affolter) throughout and beyond your education. It's a fair amount of work, but the kind of work that doesn't really feel like work. The work is extremely varied, from readings and responses to group projects. I will say that the projects were a bit frustrating at times, because you need to work well with your partners to succeed. As for advising, Tara is as good as they get. She responds to emails and will meet with you over any question you have. She treats you as an equal, and you grow so attached to her that what you fear more than anything in that class is her disappointment. As an example of the bond she forms with her students, she invited the students who stayed over Thanksgiving break to her house for Thanksgiving dinner! I put in a lot of work and was rewarded by an even higher grade than expected for my effort, so that was a nice bonus. Conservatives beware though, she's very liberal and sometimes this bias comes into play in her teachings. Honestly though, it's not a big deal unless you're unwilling to challenge your previous assumptions.
  2. Tara and this class are absolutely unbelievable. If you are a freshman and are trying to decide what seminar to take take it with affecter. Even if you don't think a class like this would interest you, or you don't know much about race, take this class and you will fall in love with the material and the readings and it WILL change your life. I enjoyed every aspect of this class, and I can't stress enough how amazing Tara is. Her classes are impossible to get into unless you're a senior so if you're a freshman and she's offering a first year seminar put it as your first choice you won't regret it!!
