Evaluation Comments for Beyer T

  1. Before this class, I had no background in Russian or Russian literature. Now I search out Russian literature that I have not yet read. This class is extremely reading-intensive (often upwards of 400 pages per week), and students are required to write a brief response paper for each class period. Class discussion are very interesting, even when the readings were not particularly so. However, most of the novels read hold one's interest. I recommend that you take a 19th century Russian lit. course first, though, as it is impossible to catch the multitudes of references to older literary canons without it. If you don't, though, the course is still worthwhile.
  2. 60% of our grade was based on a piece of paper we signed saying that we read all the books. We never discussed the books or wrote anything about them. This class was a complete waste of my time.
  3. Readings were excessive and not consistently valuable. Lectures tended to be rambling and condescending. The professor did not make a serious effort to impart useful knowledge to the class.
  4. The reading workload is incredibly intense, yet the material that we read is so fascinating that you want to do the work. Beyer is an incredibly knowledgeable professor and adds a lot to discussion. This class was my first taste of Russian literature, and now I'm a Russian lit major (from a Russian language major). Take the course if you want to be enlightened, but have enough time to read 600-page novels in a week.
