Evaluation Comments for McWilliams J

  1. Professor McWIlliams is a good professor with a lot of interesting insight. However, beware: Participation is a huge part of the grade, and there is a final exam that consists solely of identifying passages from literature and the Bible. So if you don't actively participate, miss class or don't do some of the readings your grade will suffer considerably. Otherwise the class will be both enjoyable and enriching.
  2. I absolutely agree with the previous comment. The selections for the course are consistently interesting and reasonably quick reads, and McWilliams is a kind and engaging professor. The discussions probably faltered at times because we were trying to tackle fairly nebulous topics and then piling a bible passage on top, but that is no reason to avoid the course. Highly recommend it, if just for the novel lens for interpreting literature the previous comment alluded to.
  3. Basically, this course is a great excuse to read a large chunk of American Lit through a different lens than we're used to. My class, at least, was a great mix of english and religion majors, so the potential for really great discussions are there--take advantage of it! For some reason, my class chose to sit in silence for way too long before we jumped in, forcing McWilliams to prod us more than he really should have. Really, McWilliams is very personable and really wants to work with students to design paper topics and discussions that really cover what the class is interested in, while backing all the literature up with basic history and theology surrounding the books. A lot of enjoyable reading to do with a warm and engaging professor.
